Selfmade Candle – Interview with Ricki Lawal
I’ve got a great deal of admiration for the entrepreneurs who ditch high flying careers to take a punt on running their own business. And that’s what Ricki Lawal, founder of Selfmade Candle did. She swapped her travel filled global events management career to set up her own natural candle business and hasn’t looked back since. She tells us all about it in this, our 10th advent micro business of the day feature.
A business born in lockdown, Ricki Lawal took her own experiences as the inspiration for her stunning candle business. She tells us all about it here.
In a nutshell, what do you do?
Selfmade Candle is the wellness brand for the modern day maker. We make natural soy wax candles and DIY candle kits infused with essential oils
What makes you different from your competitors?
Mission led, design focused and eco friendly. We’re all about getting lit, responsibly.
What inspired you to start this sort of business?
I was frustrated at my inability to impact change at my previous company.
Selfmade started as a side hustle to learn new things and support my wider community. 6 months later it is a pretty significant business with features in international press and the best customers I could ever ask for.
2020: What a year! How has the pandemic affected you?
Well my business started during this pandemic. I think with everything going on, it’s been a great outlet for me to be creative, meet new people and do what i love.
Sure, financially it was a very difficult decision to branch out like this, but I took the leap and have never looked back!
I think in times like this, we learn to be scrappy and make the most of everything.
What do you love most about running your business?
Speaking to my customers and reading the gift notes people send to each other when buying a Selfmade Candle for a loved one. I’ve had a few people’s dogs by them gifts and I’ve really enjoyed drawing little dog paws on gift notes!
And what has been the biggest challenge?
As a solo-preneur, being CEO, COO, CFO, CMO all at the same time can be really challenging. It’s a constant juggling act but I always think that in discomfort lies growth, and this is the most I’ve learned in such a short time.
Can you share one piece of advice for aspiring entrepreneurs?
Fear is just an excuse to be brave. It can seem really daunting to set up a business, but be brave and go for it.
