Time Flies for Kids Founders, Lucy and Jill
Jill and Lucy met at an NCT class when they were both pregnant with their first babies. 8 years later and they run a company together that produces kids' activity packs. We had a chat with them to find out how it's all going and how they've gone about the small matter of navigating a pandemic!
In a nutshell, what do you do?
Time Flies for Kids creates cleverly designed kids’ activity packs which are eco-friendly and totally portable.
Who is involved in running the business?
We are the proud co-founders of Time Flies for Kids. It’s just the two of us, working away from our kitchens to produce our beautiful activity packs.
What makes you different from your competitors?
Our activity packs are totally portable meaning they can be played with almost anywhere (although we wouldn’t recommend in the bath! :)), they’re eco-friendly as everything is either recyclable, reusable or biodegradable and they’re beautifully designed by us (the only part we didn’t design is the set of 12 fabulous recycled colouring pens).
What inspired you to start this sort of business?
With backgrounds in primary teaching and architecture, the creation of our very own children’s brand seemed the perfect way to make the most of our education experience and design skills.
Our main inspiration throughout has been to create beautiful products that will make life easier for parents like us. Happy kids, happy parents!
2020: What a year! How has Covid affected you?
It’s been very strange and a little crazy. We both had our children at home during the first lockdown so juggling home schooling and work was certainly a challenge.
Normally we would be doing all the local Christmas markets at this time of year so we’ve had to go virtual. We’ve actually started our very own Instagram virtual market @indiekidsmarket to champion small, independent kids’ brands.
You can find a directory of all the fabulous sellers involved on our website.
What do you love most about running your business?
Working together – we have so much fun (and obviously work very hard at the same time! :))
And what are the biggest challenges you face?
Marketing – neither of us has a sales or marketing background so this has been a very steep learning curve! Also, designing and making the game spinners without using any plastic.
We’re so proud of our eco-friendly spinners as it took us so long to source everything we needed to make them.
What’s the one piece of advice you would give to aspiring entrepreneurs?
Go for it! But be prepared to take on board advice from experts who know a lot more than you do. Oh, and accept that you will make mistakes.
Thank you so much Jill and Lucy!
