Claire Kinnaird on Freelance Life

Day to day right now, you’ll hear Claire Kinnaird on Edge Radio and see her reporting for PLZ Soccer. But Claire’s a freelancer who can very effectively turn her hand to most things media related. So we caught up with her to find out about freelance life.

Between presenting for an Edinburgh radio station, reporting on football games and hosting swanky award dos, you might wonder how Claire Kinnaird makes time to do anything else at all. But she fits in adventures (and blogs about them), parents an utterly adorable dog and does all sorts of other freelance work in media too.

We caught up with her to find out about freelance life as a media and broadcast freelancer.

How long have you been freelancing?

I’ve been free for a 10 years now!

And what sort of freelance work are you doing?

Radio mostly, presenting and producing. I also dabble in social media management, podcast, and generally anything in and around the wider “media” bracket.

What has been your all time favourite project?

I worked on a breakfast show for a large radio company and I had an absolute ball. We won a national award for our efforts on this show and it allowed me to do some amazing things – like hosting a mini festival to 10,000 with Rita Ora headlining and Sigma and MNEK performing too.

What does a typical day look like for you?

My days can go from one extreme to the other! Living the freelance life sometimes means you have to fit multiple clients into one day, whereas on another day your schedule may be a bit more open. At the moment it’s quite hectic for me – I can be found doing press conferences for a football reporting job I have in the morning, coming home to pick up some voiceover work at lunch and then presenting my radio show.

Freelancing highs – what’s been the best day of your freelancing career?

There’s been some epic days – hosting festivals, photoshoots, some great audio moments. But I think, for me, the best day has to be when I wasn’t in the comfort zone of a large company anymore and I stepped out looking for work as me, without the backing of a huge brand. The feeling of getting the first client on board, knowing people were trusting me. Epic.

What are the challenges you face day to day freelancing and how do you overcome them?

A challenge for me is when other people question why you’re working unsociable hours. A freelancer’s life gives a lot of flexibility, but also can be stressful and sometimes you have to work later/weekends. My schedule, at the best of times, confuses a lot of people! I still haven’t found an answer for overcoming that yet!

I guess one of the other challenges is always being on the lookout for more work or potential clients. My general motto for this is be nice and do jobs to the best of your ability. If you’re nice and work hard, people will recommend you!

Complete the sentence. If I weren’t doing this for a living, I’d be….

Bored!
